What (where) means something to me? – Ruby Grimes

~~~~~~~~
In my brainstorms of this radio project, I’ve been scouring my mind thinking of places that mean something to me. It can be easy to go about our days mindlessly walking through campus, either distracted by our phones, or music, or just the stresses of daily student life. This project focuses us to examine the space we are in and to fully be present. It’s the perfect opportunity to force ourselves to think critically about our location and the radio materials.
I’m split between two options, choosing a place of comfort on Campus and speaking on its meaningfulness, or choosing a place of discomfort that gives me space to critique the space the radio is in. These are both purposeful in their own ways, I’m just having a hard time deciding on what kind of attitude I want to have approaching this project.
A place of comfort that means a lot to me on campus is the Women’s Center–specifically their library. There, I’ve discovered books on feminist theory that I otherwise would’ve never encountered. There’s a lot of multi-media I could include in the radio set in this location. I could talk specifically about a day in the life at the women’s center. In sort of a podcast radio style–sort of like a diary entry. It could maybe even span across through several days like diary log.
I’ve also considered setting the radio up somewhere on library walk, then focusing on a critique of the politics of student orgs, or maybe something that just details the chaos of library walk. One topic that has been interesting to me is the toxicity of some student orgs, maybe integrating some elements of feminism in talking about the misogyny, racism, homophobia, and other problematic symptoms of hazing.
In all options, I’m thinking of including an amalgamation of different stories and media types (potentially) to keep it varied and interesting. I’m also excited to see who I’ll be paired with for the project, I think that having another mind to collaborate with will be so inspirational.
