Week #3 Post – Alonzo Canete

Quite honestly, the objective and structure of this class is not what I expected it to be. While I was aware that we would be analyzing works of literature that span across different cultures, I was surprised to see how involved other forms of creativity such as poetry and performance art would be within our studies. I am also surprised by the inclusion of the Visual Arts department within our final projects, as both of our classes are now interconnected. I had not had a class that worked so closely with another class before, and I am excited to see what the end project has to offer. I am fascinated by the idea of an interactive tour of UCSD that displays all of our works according to specific spots on campus, however it has forced me to envision my project in a different light.

I was originally going to make my final project a written piece, but the involvement with the Visual Arts program has caused me to reconsider. I now want to make my piece more of an auditory experience rather than a visual one, but I am still not sure of how to go about this. The idea that has been the most appealing to me is to write a song, as it is something I have experience doing before. I wrote a song for my Experimental Writing Workshop last quarter, and it honestly turned out pretty well. I also think that songwriting is the most effective way that I am able to tell the stories I want to tell, especially when focusing on the auditory experience more than the visual.

As for where I want the project to be located on campus, I have not given much thought to that. The idea itself is still quite new to me, so I haven’t been able to fully digest and think about this aspect of the project. Off the top of my head, the balcony just above Blue Pepper in the old student center and the street behind RIMAC gym that connects to both Hopkins and the Warren forest are places that I am considering. These places mainly just have personal sentimental value to me, though have nothing to do with the project. If I were going for a purely aesthetic location, then I would locate my project right in the middle of the Rady School of Management. I don’t know, perhaps the location will become clearer once the actual project does.
