Having our work be an audio project is certainly not what I was expecting going into the class. However, it presents me the opportunity to expand and experiment with a new medium in hopes of communicating my creativity. When thinking about the kind of project I want to make, the works of ASCO that touch on the experiences of the Chicano community, as well as the performance of “Son of Border Crisis,” inspire me with their commentary on culture and the use of language.
My initial idea is to explore identity, specifically second generation Asian American identity and what that means today. Asian immigrants uniquely count the immigrating generation as 0 and the first generation to be born here as 1, from what I understand. This would make me second generation. My mom being the first to be born here, she was pressured into assimilating to American culture very quickly, which then had adverse effects on my upbringing. That is the conversation I might want to bring to this collaborative project. Particularly when it comes to language and the complete disconnect from your heritage. That is very much my experience as I find myself relating less and less to my peers. The stereotypical Asian parents that we joke about and the sense of community we find in commonality feels like it is starting to slip away and a sense of isolation takes its place.
Because of the nature of this topic, I imagine the location of the project to be somewhere around the Cross Cultural Center on campus, by Price Center. Maybe the Price Center Plaza where we see a lot of students congregate because of its central position to the campus, as well as the food court nearby!
