Reading the Gomez Pena collection this week was such incredible timing because I’m in a class about multiculturalism in politics and this week we had a reading by Coulthard that argued against multicultural policies because it doesn’t go far enough or understand that people are not “one person one culture” but “one person many fragments”. Pena speaks to the psychology of this argument (knowingly or not) when discussing the purpose of artists and hybridity. “S/he speaks from more than one perspective, to more than one community, about more than one reality. His/her job is to trespass, bridge…redefine; to find the outer limits of his/her culture and cross them” wow. As someone who feels disconnected from identity, it’s simple to fall into thinking I don’t have a place on campus because everyone fits into one box of literature, or a cultural identity, or club, etc. But, because I have this fragmented identity in my interests/person I get to see this conversation between political science and literature. What a privilege it is to be able to make conversations between two texts that I never would’ve thought could be related in any way. Even more so, it’s a privilege to hear from all ends that I can be one girl, many fragments. In a similar way to these texts never being thought of in relation to each other, it makes me think I’ve been viewing my own parts out of conversation with each other. Going somewhat into how I wanted to use the music building as my location, even if it isn’t related to my academic purpose on campus its related to my fragments! I’m inspired by how the Gomez Pena collections led me into these connections- and I feel the idea for my project formulating in my brain so hopefully I can execute it the way I imagine.
