It’s been hard for me to engage in the readings as I’m not particularly adept in political or art culture jargon, especially when it comes to reading the ASCO selections. Although I’m not well-versed and am most likely missing some weight to the words of the meaning behind statements and performances done by ASCO, the overall unique way of combining and or tackling the established ways of art and performance is not lost on me. I think my favorite sort of “project” they did was the No Movie: how they try to achieve the same level of meaning and accomplish the same level of reach that a movie has but through something that is far from the concept of film and removes itself from the original constraints a film has, especially the constraints film has on certain peoples of a society.
Unfortunately, I don’t know if I’ll be able to reach this same level of artistry and complexity that ASCO has: but it definitely has given inspiration and has given a lot of food for thought. A discussion I had with a friend of mine who was aspiring to join a political organization had told me that for apart of their philosophy was that to be able to rebuild society, they couldn’t work outside of the pre-existing foundations/infrastructure that we rely upon today, that it would be unrealistic to destroy everything and build from the ground up again and be successful. I sorta think about this in relation to how I would struggle to make or build art in the same way that ASCO did: outside of the norms and conventions people would already expect art to be in. ASCO overall still gives me a new take on what I could do to transcend standard formatting and meaning of what my final project could be.
