Week 4 Journal Entry – Sara Schibuola

It took me longer than expected to read Dictee, but by its conclusion, I felt I was able to begin to think about what my workshop submission will look like. I am the last slot in the last week, so I have time to meditate over what exactly I plan to write. My first thought was, like Dictee, I will involve both English, French, and various Italian sayings that my father has taught me. I hope to combine them with locations I’ve been to in Italy, and some of my other travels, especially my trip to India in 2022, which has left a lasting impression on me. I hope to somehow relate them back to my specific location at UCSD that my radio will inhabit; perhaps something about how, after being away, it makes returning to campus easier to handle.

I am not someone who enjoys monotony or the ordinary, although I tend to fall into routines that I find difficult to break out of. The only way I have historically broken out of routines, positive or negative ones, was by traveling. I am thankful to be in a position where I can go to new places and experience all they have to offer; I know this is a privilege not everyone has. This is why I refrain from writing about my trips to Europe, or my trip to India. I don’t want it to seem like I am bragging. Through this workshop, I want to acknowledge that it is a privilege to travel, to break out of my routine, to have an opportunity to discard monotony even for a week or two.
