From our readings from the previous week, I feel that there was so much to be inspired by and that ignited a strong spark of curiosity for me. For the ASCO reading, I felt really compelled by Henry Gamboa Jr’s personal retellings about receiving a poor education and how that translated into him learning through the experiences he had on the streets and what he was able to document, and eventually create. I feel that it connected a bit to Gomez Pena, because his manner of showing his perspective on multiculturalism in US that is constantly re-configuring the way it looks at immigrants, is through the act of creation and satire. The ASCO Living Murals art piece really really inspired me, because it reminded me that there is humor in the way religion is held on my culture. This group having a Virgin Mary walking around the streets of LA is very silly and fun to me, but I was raised (as are a lot of Latinos) to view this woman as a holy, untouchable figure. It kinda sparked this freedom in me, that art does not have rules and will not reprimand those that go across the imaginary fences of what “is” and “isn’t” right. When it came to the Tenacular thinking reading, I felt a lot of good confusion. It felt like a science article, but I was always aware that the author was focused on the human world and how our interactions have lead to a point where nature is no longer centered, and the playing with language was quite impressive. It was still super cool, and I loved how the graphics were a necessary touch for those who would have otherwise not known about the species being discussed. I really am sticking to the ASCO mural as inspiration for my final work.
