Where do I go now? While Dictee was enjoyable read overall, it honestly kind of blurred what I want my vision of the project to be. I think it’s constant shifts in subjects, themes, and structure kind of tainted my straightforward idea of what my final project can be. I am pretty sure that I still want it to be a song, but now I’m starting to question what the structure of the song could look like. I’m also pondering how I’m going to implement the idea of code switching and trans-language into the song itself.
Looking at the first round of workshops, I can tell that my peers are also experimenting with form within their works. Perhaps I can take something from their book. I was thinking of implementing spoken word into my song, like a poem or a short story or something. I feel like this could be a way to introduce a completely different element into my song, whether that be through a new story entirely or telling the same story in a different way. I also think that it would create a different listening experience from the traditional experience of listening to the song. I’m thinking of creating something akin to Travis Scott’s Parasail, where comedian Dave Chapelle repeats a spoken mantra throughout the songs runtime. I’ve posted the song below.
