Week #4 Journal Entry – Isaiah Calonzo

After reading some of my peers’ initial drafts of their final projects during workshop, it has me thinking about what my own final project will look like. One of them integrated multiple languages, and I really wanted to do something like that. However, I’m struggling with how to incorporate multiple languages into a prose piece that would be easy for a listener to understand. Should I repeat the sentences in different languages, or should I use them to further my ideas? But, then it becomes difficult for the listener to receive the overall message. But, that is an inherent problem with using multiple languages. 

In any case, there might be solutions for me in Dictee. The form changes so often in the book, but it still manages to communicate complex ideas about religion, gender power dynamics, and the role of women in society, among other things. 

Right now, I’m imagining my project to be a series of letters. Some can be to parents, some to friends and lovers. And they would be written in a few of the select languages I know, and possibly with the help of others, a few more. Or possibly interviews with other students on campus? I would want to ask them about their experience with their culture, or a lack thereof, as children of people who weren’t raised under that culture. I really want to explore the trickle down effects of assimilation and the complexity of the American identity.
