Week 5 Journal Entry – Alex Lara

Today really helped me get a better understanding of what I want my project to look like. After listening to Marco’s podcast and hearing the writing process behind it, I feel a bit more comfortable in creating my draft for my piece. One of the first two things Marco said that I took note of was , “ Is my writing talking to a friend?” and “ Are there other ways to express yourself other than words ?”. These two questions definitely helped guide my thinking into the way I want to present my topic within this project. One, I don’t need to create such a formal piece. I think having seen so many other experimental works in our previous examples, I was a bit intimidated to try to create something similar. I think I will try to work on something that is more true to myself and the way I usually interact with my environment and the people within my everyday life. Two, I was reminded of how important sound will be within this project. I think one main element that was bringing me hesitation to the project was that my words would be heard rather than read. This felt like an obstacle within my project. However, after listening to Marco’s podcast I can start to see this task as more of a creative opportunity. I plan on playing with the sounds within my environment and incorporating that within my work. Seeing Marco’s “script” for his shows was also useful in the way that it was more of an outline rather than a word for word dialogue. He let the area where he conducted his interviews do some of the work in being the background of his show. The audience also got a sense of the translanguaging since his podcasts had many moments where the person being interviewed spoke in their native language and was then translated after. I appreciated how we got to hear the original conversation rather than everything being only translated. I plan to include some Spanish in my work possibly and I think I will do a similar thing where the language is heard and maybe later translated.
