Week 8 – Making Moves – Cydney Macon

Based off my last entry log, I’ve actually made quite a bit of progress. I finally found out where I want to place my project: Curls and Swells! Curls and Swells is the display at M.O.M. cafe that caters to Black haircare products for Black students to have easier access to. I spoke with the student who owns the display and she said she was happy to have our radio placed there. So, I’m really excited to complete this project soon! It was also great meeting Matthew my VIS 147A partner. We have already created a plan to conduct our radio project.

I will say that I am a little nervous as the radio is supposed to be 7-10 min and my piece is not very long. I think as of now my piece is not more than 3 minutes long. I’m thinking of looking back at some old writings I have related to hair and may add it to my piece to reach the limit. As of right now, I’m still going through edits and looking over comments left on my piece, thus that’s something I’ve been giving my attention to.

Aside from the final project, I wanted to take time to discuss the reading from last week, Twerk by LaTasha Diggs. When I first read the couple of poems by Diggs, it felt like jumping into a pool and being shocked by the coolness at first. The beginning of Twerk has a lot of elements going on all and feels really confusing at first. The way she switches between languages and dialects reminded me of Guillermo Gómez-Peña’s, Son of Border Crisis. However, I thought Gómez-Peña’s message was a little more clearer than Twerk. Diggs I felt was relaying a lot about human sexuality whilst also speaking on issues significant to the black community. My favorite was the My First Black Nature Poem because I thought some of things Diggs was saying really resonated with my experience as a black person. What Diggs piece taught me was that potentially in future works I can try to incorporate other languages or dialects to convey a message.

Overall, I am excited going about this final project and hope it is a valuable piece to Curls and Swells. I also have been inspired by Diggs to create pieces that can be understood by many people but ultimately serving one message. Until next time 🙂
