Week #8 Blog Post—Perla Limon

I’ve finalized the script as of today, and all that’s left is recording and editing it! I was a little bit worried about the idea of including multiple languages, but I think I found a workaround that fits within this piece. I didn’t want to include a language known on earth, since I would have to read it myself, and I’d hate to butcher anything. Instead, I thought I’d showcase language on the fritz within purgatory. An instance in which the universal language of purgatory just stops working, and we get a glimpse of something wrong. To do this, I’m going to include segments of Clara’s dialogue reversed. It’ll sound weird, and I consider it a sort of code-switching that happens within this world. During Realignment, which is an event I made up for this world, language just doesn’t work, and it breaks down into gibberish. Though, if you listen to it in reverse, it becomes understandable. Still, I’m pretty happy with the code-switching between Dead and living Clara. I think we get a pretty good sense within my piece of who she really is, and how she’s changed, or at least how much more comfortable she gets with the strange and unexplained.

I also had some fun in revising it by making Living!Clara imprisoned by the script as its narrator. Because of this, she’s vaguely aware of Dead!Clara’s own script. Dead!Clara, however, is free to do whatever she wants. She has free will and can choose to scrap lines entirely. Narrator!Clara, though, can only slightly deviate. She can add in lines, but she has no choice but to go through the script regardless, and there is an instance of her being forced to narrate despite being incredibly unwilling. Oh, and Clara knows this. She can hear the narration, though she doesn’t acknowledge it at all, other than making snide comments.

I feel a bit more comfortable with the concept of audio editing, now. One of my friends was kind enough to walk me through the basics, and I feel way more equipped to add in overlapping sounds, audio, music, and other sound effects. Here’s to hoping recording it goes smoothly!
