Week #8: ¡Ponte las pilas! – Niko Luna

What a week! (It’s Monday.)

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to our guest speakers today and took a lot of inspiration in their comments about execution and building community through understanding/sharing stories. I am hoping picturing my audience for each language in my head will aid the flow in my piece.

I have been in contact with my partner and the Library, hoping to get confirmed location by today or tomorrow to update the Google doc. 

This week I am also finishing last revisions to my piece and recording (editing if needed, though I like the idea of using just my voice and maybe some background noise). I imagine the recording may take a day as I play around with the execution and static element if included. 

It is a little hard to see the execution of it occurring right now as I’m in between multiple interdisciplinary projects and deadlines. But, like always, am just trusting the process.

I still need to make the major revisions so I won’t include a chunk of my project but here are changes I will implement:

For writing: Expanding on feelings of shame or embarrassment if speaking on the loss of a language or understanding. Maybe about the stumbling through a new language. Like a fawn on wobbly legs.

Further exploration of sonic similarities through language. Forgetting the term now, but this was brought up in class today with the examples of library and libreria. In my piece there’s even a rhythm that seemed to occur, a musicality, like “Diss is close to miss but don’t get it twisted, les digo…”

Clarifying that part about not being able to envision success. Clarifying the origins of this passion for learning languages. 

Shoutout Ryan for calling out the queer experience that bled into my work, maybe I’d like to express this more prominently. 

Expanding on different medias across culture if there’s space.

Flowing playfully through languages with rhyme?

Does all this translanguaging lead back to Spanish? Does Spanish mean a lot to me-because really  I am the narrator-because it was the first? Expanding on ‘this is so’ themes. This will help extend the recording and piece.

For recording: I believe incorporating background noise or moments of silence can be impactful, and help fill some time as well. I do not want to rush through the recording. Instead I will allow audiences to digest the words and imagery. 

Potential playing with inflection and accent. I liked a funny recommendation to use a valley girl accent for ‘that’s soo California.’

And yes I will be including the crossed out segments of the piece. I am glad they don’t need to be tossed. I think another aspect of my writing I am overcoming is fear around saying too much or the wrong thing. Like what? Just say it, man.
