Week #5 – Ruby Grimes

As I write this, I feel that what ended up being my Workshop piece was quite different than what I had imagined.

I had a hard time deciding on what form my piece would take. I wanted it to be a visual and auditory experience, so I tried to think of ways that it could be visually interesting while still being accurately translated into an audio file. I ended up coming up with the idea to make it seem like a book of entries/stories that are opening and closing based on their separations.

In terms of how this project relates to themes of code-switching and translanguaging, there is a lot about adapting to environment. As it stands currently, there are 3 separate entries of my story, and they each have to do with the speaker establishing their role in the environment. I would like to do more within the realm of translanguaging and add in additional entries in Indonesian (another native language of mine) as well as Javanese (another another native language). I think these technical language differences will enrich the entry-style of my project and give it more space to contribute to the class theme of translanguaging.

I also had a difficult time just deciding the form of that so I will be thinking of ways to ensure that its form is cohesive in the theme/message I want to get across.
