I was able to finish my workshop piece over the weekend, and I’m honestly quite proud of the outcome. It’s still in its rougher phases as of right now but the foundation is definitely there and definitely solid. I still have to get it workshopped though, but I think I’ll be able to make any necessary changes to the project in time to make it presentable for our final collaboration with Visual Arts.
I wrote and performed a song that that is English throughout the first half and Spanish throughout the last half. I tried to focus mainly on the performative aspect of the piece and how it would work as an audio file. This directed my project towards music rather than creative writing, as I feel like potential listeners would be more inclined to listed to musical piece rather than a spoken word piece. This also dictated the length of my project being around 4-5 minutes, as I would not want the audience to feel that my project is boring or drags on. Speaking from an auditory perspective, I think the project turned out quite well. Both my vocal and guitar recordings sounded clean and legible, and I feel that the length of the project was reasonable enough so that listeners would not feel burdened by listening to the whole thing.
The weakest part of my project is most likely the lyrical/written aspects of it, as they were the parts of the project I paid least attention to. Focusing mainly on the performative and audio aspects of my projects left me with not as much time to complete the lyrical aspects of it. While I definitely don’t think that the lyrics are bad per se, they don’t really tell that specific of a story and feel more like a collection of vaguely connected phrases. I imagine that this will be the main critique of my piece once workshop comes around. I am also a little iffy on how well my Spanish pronunciations were, as I had not had a lot of experience actually speaking the language itself.
