Week 9 – Near the Finish Line – Cydney Macon

I’ve now finished the project since the last journal entry. I made A LOT of edits. I took under heavy consideration of how I would wanted to define “being natural.” I took the literal definition of the word “natural” and played with the idea of what is innate and inherent. I thought this would be a nice set up for the rest of the piece. I also took the suggestion to separate my piece into sections. I thought this was a nice play into often when it comes to doing black hair, you have to section it to style it or aid to it in some way. Additionally, I incorporated another story I wrote as a section. Section III is an autobiographical story about how my mom would do my hair when I was six years old. I thought it was a nice personal touch because that piece deals with Black girlhood whilst also some of the complexities that come with growing up Black.

I’m happy with how my piece came out! I especially love the beginning and ending of the piece. The beginning I thought was a great set-up especially when dealing with the idea that my hair is seen as natural as in that’s how I was made. The ending I loved as well because of incorporating Malcolm X’s speech of “Who taught you to hate yourself?” Which is an important speech pertaining to Black women.

Lastly, this week in class, I enjoyed listening to the creators of Future Echoes during Week 8. I believe that their efforts to document what’s happening at the San Diego-Mexico border was really admirable. I thought their project was a beautiful representation of bringing to life the people often forgotten. Actually hearing the voice of the people there was an excellent execution on their part. Their project was inspiring as part of my career goal is to bring voice to those who aren’t thought about or forgotten. Thus, the idea of actually using the voices of those who often are represented in media is an idea could definitely use in the future.

Overall, this week was very productive and I’m happy with how it came together. I’m thankful for my peers giving me some great feedback. Also, I’m thankful for Future Echoes coming to our class. Maybe for future projects, I can try using actually voices for auditory story/or for a intercultural piece.
