Week 9 Journal Entry – Nathaniel Wood

Well, it is near the end of the quarter. And I have finished almost all of the coursework for this class. My audio file is recorded and has been submitted, as well as saved on an SD card. All that is left is to finish Part II of the final project (which I will do after my midterm for another class this week) and set up my radio in Eighth College tomorrow, assuming my partner has finished it by then.

Okay, so I finished my audio file. I did take into account some of the feedback, especially adding in dead channels and changing the name of the piece. However, some of the other feedback I got I did not fully take into consideration, for several reasons.

I read my script for all of the recordings (minus some free audio I downloaded) instead of having other people involved. I did this mostly because I was a bit too scared of trying to get other people I know to read this aloud. Plus, I don’t know that many people who I feel comfortable enough around to help me with this project. I did try other voices for this project which came across with varying degrees of success. But it was just me for the whole thing.

I also did not add in any music because all of the music I wanted to add were actual songs that I was worried about using without permission. That is why it was never in my original script and why my final script has no music. That and the fact that I can’t write music. So, it is all dialogue.

Lastly, I know some people talked about adding in background noise to get an idea of who was listening and why. And I tried to incorporate that. I recorded it several times, but each time, it did not mix well with the main piece. It only hindered it, in my opinion, instead of helping it. So, I ultimately nixed that and left only the main track. I may have been able to make it work but this weekend was busy, so I did not have the time to mess around with it as much as I might have wanted to.

Overall, I have mixed feelings about the end result. I still think it is a good piece, one that gets my point across (hopefully). It sounds good and was improved from the initial draft. However, not every idea I had or wanted to do was added in, as outlined above. So, although I am proud of what I did, I do think it could be better. But so long as others like it, then that is all that really matters. That, and that I get a good grade on it.
