Week 9 – Arshia Singh

Everything is finally coming together! This week, I edited and recorded my piece. I’m not very tech-savvy, so I was a little nervous about editing the audio. What I ended up doing was finding a loop of mourning dove calls on Youtube and I played that in the background while I spoke. I had to start over a few times (from stuttering, messing up words, losing my place in the script, etc.) but I think this actually worked out better than if I were to overlay both pieces after. Hearing the bird calls as I recorded helped me find places to pause while I spoke, and I think this resulted in a much more natural read.

I also got to meet with my VIS 147A partner this week! She showed me the EnVision Lab (which was so cool!) as well as the board she created. We transferred the file to the SD card, which we then put into the board. It seemed to be working, but we wanted to be sure, so we walked around to find an outlet nearby. Unfortunately, all we could hear was static, so we went back to the Lab and asked Brett for some assistance, and he was incredibly helpful because we encountered a few problems. First, the file name had spaces, which might have confused the card and that’s why it wasn’t able to play. We changed the name, but it still didn’t work. Then we realized the file was in mp4a format instead of mp3, so we changed that, but still no luck. The next step was to look at the card itself. Brett thought the issue might be the amount of storage on the card, so he brought us a new one. After that still didn’t work, he played around with the volume settings on the board and finally, we were able to hear it through the radio!

This process has been unlike anything I’ve done in college so far, but I’m so grateful I got to be a part of it.
