Week #9 Journal Entry

The script for the project is done. The recording is done. The radio has been delivered to the location. I feel a little more relaxed now that everything is pretty much done with. I’m not quite happy with the final product, partly because I hate listening to my voice, but mainly because I wasn’t able to fully deliver on the project I wanted to make. I had some really great responses to work with, but it was also a lot of data to go through with not enough room to write. I think the 1000 word limit applied to the final project and not just the workshop draft, right? If not, oh well. It was a self-inflicted limitation then. I also didn’t leave myself very much time to work with. An unfortunate circumstance, but I still am happy with some of the conclusions I was able to come to through my survey. Listening to other people’s stories was fascinating and I learned a lot. And the process itself was fun. I would gladly do something similar in the future.

Professor Lily Hoang’s visit was also really fun. This quarter I have had to do a lot of collaborative writing and the experience has been conflicting, so it was very insightful in listening to her talk about how her book was made. I also thought how difficult it must have been to come to a product both the authors were satisfied with, which is what prompted my question in class. This class has had its challenges with the readings and with the final project, but the one thing that has been really fun and engaging throughout the quarter is the guest speakers we’ve had. The conversations we’ve had with them and their explanations of their work will probably be the things that stick with me the most.
