Final Post for the Quarter – Cydney Macon

Since the last time, things have started to look up finally. After a long hassle trying to find a location, it seems that my project will be placed in the OASIS office. I’m so happy to finally have a location for my radio station and even more grateful for OASIS being willing to open their doors up to my project. I will say it’s been stressful trying to find a new location under such short notice. It really did take me until the Nth hour to fully complete my project. I am also so thankful for Professor Stalbaum and Professor Carroll for being so patient with me during this stressful time. It means a lot to have professors that are understanding during this stressful time.

Additionally, I think OASIS will also be a great place to have my project. I have been a part of OASIS since Summer Bridge and their programs have been a safe haven for me to express stories such as mine about Black haircare and the complexities that come with it in white supremacist society. OASIS stands as a organization that cares for empowerment and social justice, which is what my piece represents as well.

Beyond the stress from my final project, I enjoyed our class guest, Lily Hoàng. Her piece with VI KHI NÀO I thought was an interesting take on translanguaging. There were multiple things I found fascinating about her piece. For one, I thought the way it was rewritten in three different ways: English, Vietnamese, and English-Vietnamese. I thought the three different languages were reflective of the story itself. You have an abusive relationship where both partners want different things thus, speaking different languages. Thus, them together, would be like English-Vietnamese which can be seen as languages clashing like the relationship.

Also, I thought using AI to tell help write Broccoli was cool! To have CHATGPT create a story using English-Vietnamese was a unique way of using technology for you advantage. I think this is an especially important tool to know as there are many fears about AI currently. Using AI and critiquing it for your use was great to hear. I thought Hoàng’s project was similar in the sense of trying to create a relationship between technology and art. More importantly, using and technology and art to make projects that are enhances one’s story. I think this is especially important as we will currently during a time where art seems to be competing with technological advancements that can sometimes kill one’s imagination (and attention span!).

Overall, I’m so happy to finally have a space to place my project. Additionally, I appreciate Professor Hoàng sharing her piece with the class and helping us imagine further with the art of writing.
