So…
After the last journal entry, I had finished recording the final project and gotten the SD card needed for the project. Me and my partner Matthew went to install the project at the Curls and Swells display the Friday. However, it looks we may need further approval from the supervisor of M.O.M. cafe. What happened was the owner of the display experienced a miscommunication with the supervisor of M.O.M. about the approval of our project being installed at M.O.M. The owner of the display, however, has been really gracious about the whole situation and offered to talk to the supervisor on our me and my partner’s behalf. I will be honest, the whole situation was pretty frustrating but I do have hope we will be given approval before Week 10. I think what is also frustrating is thinking you’re done when you’re really not. Regardless, I still do have hopes for our situation.
I have already been in contact with Professor Stalbaum and plan to talk to Professor Carroll about the situation. I just hope this miscommunication doesn’t effect my VIS 147A partner in any way.
In addition, to talking with the owner of the Curls and Swells display, she mentioned that she would like to have my project to remain on her display. After some discussion, we talked about having my story put on a QR code and have it remain there. This was really important for her to have because she equally thinks it’s important to have to a conversation regarding Black hair care and the disparities that come with. Thus, I’m really excited and happy to being working with the owner of Curls and Swells. It’s nice to know that my story adds value to a deeper conversation in regards to texturism – something I hoped to accomplish. I will say that I still will be a little disappointed that my final project may not be there for Week 10. Mostly because I know how much the final project meant to Aaliyah.
After (nearly!) completing the project, this project has helped me to learn that there’s other creative ways to tell a story. I think the idea of creating a radio station for others to listen to is a cool way for others to walk around and find stories made by students. Especially stories that probably otherwise would be ignored outside of this course. I do wish that some of the instructions for this class were made a little more clearer as there was a lot of confusion as to what was expected from us. However, I think the end result of this project is still valuable.
