Initially, I wanted my piece to highlight the location that it was displayed at, the front desk of the Design Lab. Upon brainstorming, I decided that I wanted to emulate that of the gates of design and to encompass everything that the design lab stood for. Both as a welcoming archway and one that encompassed my style of design: interdisciplinary and multi-dimensional.
I thought that a pull apart art piece would do it justice. The first portion was a multi-layered acrylic painting that acts as a physical welcome sign to the Design Lab. The second behind the scenes portion was the electronics that I hid away at the radio station.
The song that plays on my channel is a quote from our founder.
“Cognition attempts to make sense of the world: emotion assigns value”
– Don Norman, The Design of Everyday Things
That I deconstructed into separate assigned 26 tones to each letter in the alphabet and strung together to play a piece. The longer it plays the clearer the tones become and the faster it speeds up as you slowly begin to understand and comprehend the tones. Just as the quote mentions, while we attempt to make sense of the world and the binary, only we ourselves can assign the value and assess the worth of the piece itself.
