Reason(s) For Lattices is my attempt at creating soundscapes all from the perspective of mathematical reasoning. I was inspired by the lattice set in abstract math and hence I used some of their logic in my initial harmony generation. Hence all of these notes follow along ratios established by that mathematical theory. I furthered this by incorporating the Fibonacci sequence as a way to control the spacing between each note. Then finally I incorporated the Gaussian Noise function to create dissonance between the notes at randomized intervals. All of these come together in strange and complex ways to create the “music” that is playing.
This is placed on the 16th floor of the Sankofa building in Eight College. The environment is beautiful here yet there is the consistent sound of construction. These views of the natural world coincide with the mathematical sound as many of these mathematical reasonings are used to explain aspects of our world scientifically.
Alongside this project I created a digital visualizer to give an online perspective to this piece that will live on after the radio project concludes. It is a visualizer created using, once again, the Fibonacci sequence as well as noise functions in p5.js. Found Here: https://editor.p5js.org/mihmdaniel1/full/YmtoKghsL
