I have officially shared my survey with people and the responses are coming in. A few people really stood out and gave insightful answers. I’m glad people were able to earnestly engage with the topic and felt comfortable sharing their thoughts and experiences with me. While reading through some of these answers, it really expanded my thoughts on the subject. Going into this project, I had a certain direction I wanted to take the conversation and particular answers I was looking for that would strengthen the narrative in my head. But, learning about everyone’s unique experiences with language and identity really broadened my perspective. The paper is now less about presenting a certain experience to the audience and having them take that as the truth, and more about documenting multiple people’s experiences and sharing their truths that others can find relatable or thought-provoking. I have also really been inspired by this premise and want to turn it into a real documentary film for next year’s film festival. I want to follow up with some of the participants from the survey because they gave such amazing answers. Their stories were really interesting and I would love to learn more. I also think if I continue this project, I can really achieve my initial goal of painting the experience of immigrants in America and the importance of language. This project has been really difficult with the miscommunications and complications, but I’m glad I was able to do it at least.
