A part of modern and technological art that I deeply admire is its ability to be interactive, sharing its artistry with the viewer so that it grows with every interaction. With this project, I had a lot of fun playing around with a medium I had never used before. Arduino and electronics were very new to me and I found myself met with many confusing aspects. However, this made my successes that much more rewarding.
I stationed this radio transmitter at Outback Adventures on the Northernmost point of campus. This is where I work, and I wanted my project’s impact to be a fun and playful experience just like it had been when I was building it. My vision for this piece was to program different music and themes throughout the week, having my coworkers get the chance to listen to the piece on a portable radio stationed next to it and guess the songs as they changed. It was incredibly rewarding to get to see people’s reaction to hearing my programming playing on the radio as well as having fun with figuring out the pieces that played. Ultimately, my radio station is a celebration of sound and its profound impact on our lives. It is a space where voices are heard, stories are shared, and music becomes a universal language.
