Week 10 – 6/3/24

The week is finally here! After much back and forth, scrambling, and general confusion/anxiety, we have finally reached installation week!

One of the biggest struggles of this project was determining where I would put my installation. I had landed on what seemed like a perfect location; the Writing Hub–where I work and therefore spend most of my time at. By nature, the Writing Hub is a place for students to go not only for guidance and mentorship when it comes to writing, but also as a place where they can share their literary creativity and unique voices. It seemed as though this would be the perfect location, but unfortunately with the union strike and us academic workers being on strike, the plan didn’t ultimately work out. It was time for a back up plan.

Thankfully, I had one brewing even while I was working to obtain permission at the Writing Hub, which was to call in a favor from a friend who lives on campus. One of my close friends, Jackie, happens to live in the same building and suite that I lived at last year. This serendipitous fact turned out to be useful when thinking of another location I could have my installation at.

Considering the themes of my piece (evolving, coming of age, translanguaging in the sense of belonging), having to adapt just felt fitting. Installing the piece at a place I used to call home heightened the overall nostalgia of the piece. The more I thought about the new location, sense it made for it to be there. My old dorm was the closest building in Seventh College to the beach, with my roommates having an ocean view which went perfectly with the ambient ocean noises I added into my piece.

This process has been so rewarding. I thought I knew so much about adaptability, but I learned even more the past ten weeks of this project. I’ve been given so much inspiration of where to creatively from here, and I’m so thankful for all that this class has given me.
