Week 8- Melissa Ha

I really loved the talk that Cognate Collective gave us about their work, I think that their work is super experimental. Emphasizing the radio functions of it especially! I loved that they write and create from the space and location of the piece first; and how they incorporate so much historical context in order to inform listeners to what is happening in the current moment. Reading through their work in the publication part, I liked the interview they had with the indigenous community members and asking them about their experiences working with business owners. It really opened my eyes to the ways in which we can work together to help solve some of the past issues instead of just pushing it aside as just “history”.

I also loved hearing about the process of their project, from the radio being blasted out of the car, and flyers being handed out to people who were in the line to cross the border, it made me think about the space that we occupy and live in.

As for my project, I finally came up with a first draft of my radio transcript. It was very rough and inspired by code-switching in the professional world and by my own experiences trying to speak Vietnamese. I also reached out to my partner to get in touch with how the radio project is going. We are hopefully going to meet up soon to talk about what we need to do for the setting up of the radio in either my dorm or in pepper canyon hall.
