I deeply enjoyed getting to hear from Cognate Collective and the work they did. It was interesting to understand the origin of the organization’s name; focusing on the similarities between languages.

“Language acquires us” –instead of us acquiring and collecting information.

I was also super interested in hearing about the party economy between UCSD students and the club scene in Tijuana. I thought that this history (UCSD’s having a party shuttle that took students straight to the TJ club scene) was so ironic because currently, UCSD’s reputation is mostly known as the antithesis of a party school. In fact, we even have the nickname “UC Socially Dead.” It makes me wonder what happened in the years between this party bus and where we are now. It’s a shame, because the location of our school gives us the special opportunity to connect with the cultures of Mexico and TJ specifically. Borders have very little validity, and I think playing into the artistic party youth culture that could be shared internationally would be a helpful way to help dispel any preconceived notions of what things are like “on the other side of the Border.” I would be interested in hearing more about these party shuttles, and more about this culture in general, and to see if there’s any chance or any surviving semblance of a similar system.
